LIFE, by MARVEA JOHNSON First Line: Life is like the purple shadows Last Line: But not stains, when life is done. Subject(s): Life | ||||||||
Life is like the purple shadows On yonder hills that lie, Or the flowers in the meadows That blossom but to die; Yes, something like the glistening dewdrops After a cooling shower, Sparkling like jewels in the sun Lasting but one short hour. Life is like a gorgeous rainbow Spanning the sky of blue, Or the flitting airy butterfly as it Vanishes in the aerial hue; Yes, something like a story By youth and the aged told, It may be of pomp and glory, Of things that soon are old. Life is like a mighty river Rushing on its way, As it flows on forever, Never ceasing night or day; Yes, something like the springtime Bringing flowers and soft green grass, Which lasts but a few short months -- How quickly they do pass. Life is like a huge book; We turn a page each day, Often turning back, But never stopping on our way. May our lives be like the snowflakes Snatched by the burning sun; When gone will leave marks But not stains, when life is done. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PRIVILEGE OF BEING by ROBERT HASS SEAWATER STIFFENS CLOTH by JANE HIRSHFIELD SAYING YES TO LIVING by DAVID IGNATOW THE WORLD IS SO DIFFICULT TO GIVE UP by DAVID IGNATOW DOMESDAY BOOK: JOHN SCOFIELD by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
