Subject(s): Death; Dead, The

I stood between the light and dark today,
Nor felt this twilight in the mind's strange gloom.
Beyond I saw the winter's deepening gray,
And All-That-Mattered near me in the room.
Never again would I be needed there,
Tense for a whisper or the sudden lift
Of drooping lids; or bravely yearn to share
The glimmer of a smile as love's last gift.
The end had come -- as well I knew it would.
And time stood still while yet I labored on
To breathe, to move as any human should,
Unshattered by a courage long since gone.
I watched the snow drift downward flake by flake,
And knew how quietly a heart could break.
