Subject(s): Great Britain - History; English History

On mountain slopes, whose rocky summits glow
Tier upon tier about one crimson spire,
Hugh sought the vision of his soul's desire --
The white immensity no mind can know;
Above the height where storm-whirled eagles go
He heard the lonely stars' deep thundered choir,
And saw vast lights and shapes of living fire
Around the altars of eternal snow.

Then with his dream into the vales he came
To shape the heavy stones through love's strange power,
Bearing upon his back the workman's hod;
Till, lifted by his spirit's burning flame,
The minster soared with pinnacle and tower
Sunward to meet the Mystery of God.
