The great sword is broken, beloved, The shining sword you held across my path And made a wall to guard me from the mire. And I have walked in the way that was closed, And my garments are spattered, And I look down at the broken pieces of the sword. But I am not fit, even for that, Even to look on it, broken as it is, For I have walked in the mire And it is only mire that I am fit to see. Will you pick up the pieces of the sword, beloved, And weld them together in the flame of your love And wash me clean in the tears of your forgiveness And walk with me in the way that the sword could not close? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...PARTHENOPHIL AND PARTHENOPHE: MADRIGAL 14 by BARNABE BARNES SONNETS IN SHADOWS: 1 by ARLO BATES IN PRAISE OF PAIN by HEATHER MCHUGH THE SYMPATIZERS by JOSEPHINE MILES LEEK STREET by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR SONGS OF THE WIVES OF SOLOMON: THE ESCAPE by ELIZABETH DEWING KAUP SONGS OF THE WIVES OF SOLOMON: VARIATIONS by ELIZABETH DEWING KAUP |
