GOOD-NIGHT, by
First Line: I like to think the last sleep
Last Line: And closed his eyes.
Subject(s): Birds; Children; Sleep; Childhood

I like to think the last sleep
Will come somewhat like this,
He had climbed into my chair
For a good-night kiss.

Sunlight through the window
Found us there,
As we sat rocking
In the big armchair.

Voices at the window,
Flowers stirred . . .
I heard the singing
Of a tired bird.

I looked at the child,
And Lo, to my surprise,
He leaned yet closer,
And closed his eyes.
