I TOUCHED A STAR, by ELINOR KETTLE First Line: Tonight the heavens nearly touched the earth Last Line: For atlas, that would not have been so very hard. Subject(s): Stars | ||||||||
Tonight the heavens nearly touched the earth. I merely had to reach my hand a bit and feel a star. I did. I touched Mars -- but not for long -- It burned! Because it glowed more red than all the others. Next -- out of curiosity, I touched a star that dipped on the horizon Just where the churchspire pierced the black, Then my palm tingled with the icy smart of A thousand diamond points shooting from that Blue-white star. I was surprised! Did you ever hold in your hand the Seven Sisters? I did. It was just like picking up a handful of soap bubbles; It squashed! It seemed there were billions of tiny bubbles, They were for the Dragon to snap at. I know. I was wise until I tried to lift the moon. It's too bad I'd left Atlas back there a million years or so; I would have liked the moon in our back yard. For Atlas, that would not have been so very hard. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE EPIC STARS by ROBINSON JEFFERS HYMN TO THE STARS by GEORGE LAWRENCE ANDREWS CHRISTMAS TREE by JOHN FREDERICK NIMS CLEMATIS MONTANA by MADELINE DEFREES THE UNCERTAINTY PRINCIPLE by JAMES GALVIN TO SEE THE STARS IN DAYLIGHT by JAMES GALVIN |
