THE OLD SAILOR, by IRVIN C. KREEMER First Line: I'm too old to go sailing again, you may think Last Line: And be feeling the bite of the spray. Subject(s): Old Age; Sailing & Sailors; Seamen; Sails | ||||||||
I'm too old to go sailing again, you may think, To buffet the hurricanes there; I tell you the sea marks the heaven's brink -- Blow the spray in my silvery hair. I can handle my job on the mainmast yet Or join in the "heave and pawl" And I'll sing you a chantey you cannot forget Or pipe you a bosun's call. I can hear the gulls crying, they're lonesome for me, They follow each vessel in vain, They are calling me back to the beautiful sea; Dear Lord, ship me somewhere again! It is many a year since I've sailed the seas, But I am sharp with a longing today That I'd like to be wearing my dungarees, And be feeling the bite of the spray. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SAILS OF MURMUR by ANSELM HOLLO THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER by SAMUEL TAYLOR COLERIDGE TOM BOWLING ['S EPITAPH] by CHARLES DIBDIN HOW'S MY BOY? by SYDNEY THOMPSON DOBELL LOVE AT SEA by THEOPHILE GAUTIER TO MARK ANTHONY IN HEAVEN by WILLIAM CARLOS WILLIAMS |
