So many lovely notes come to my ear
From brook and bird --
That oft midst toil and carping care
My soul is stirred.

The sound of rain upon a shingled roof
Soothes me to sleep,
While whispering winds through darkened pines
Their vigils keep.

Caressing "coo" of pigeons on an oaken beam --
The drowsy "tweet"
Of nestling chicks beneath their mother's wing,
So soft and sweet.

The rhythmic beat of eager wings
Across the sun,
The hoot of owl at eventide,
When day is done.

The carefree laughter of a child
Can often lift
The weary load of saddened years
That downward drift.

Unwritten music, pulsing sweet and low,
When muted string
Would seem ofttimes e'en gently brushed
By angel's wing.

My heart awakes to eager longings,
And to yearn
To keep my soul attuned to things
That breathe and burn.

The busy hum of bees in summer gardens
Gay with flowers,
Where bird notes keep me willingly enslaved,
Enchanted hours.

The rustle of the falling autumn leaves
In woodland way,
When down the old familiar path
My footsteps stray.

And from the dewy grass of evening
Crickets lone
Chirp mournfully of sunny hours,
With summer flown.

The cadence of the moaning winter wind,
While safe and warm
I sit in chimney nook, protected
From the storm.

But lo -- from boggy marsh, wee heralds pipe
Their message clear,
And soon from budding bush a robin sings,
And spring is here!
