THE HOUSE BESIDE THE STREAM, by LAUREL LAUER First Line: Reserved, it stands beside the quiet stream Last Line: As though to linger...Loath to go away. Subject(s): Houses; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
Reserved, it stands beside the quiet stream; Its windows and its walls inside are bare; No cover stills the floor or mutes the stair. Through spectral panes shines forth no amber beam Of friendly light at night; there does not seem To be a thing but loneliness to share. A strange hurt silence everywhere. The once dear happy house is left to dream. The listening ear is tuned to catch a strain (A soft sweet echo from each lonely room) Of silver music from another day. Faint tokens of the past alone remain, Grey ghosts that glide and falter in the gloom As though to linger...loath to go away. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI |
