THE HOUSE BESIDE THE STREAM, by
First Line: Reserved, it stands beside the quiet stream
Last Line: As though to linger...Loath to go away.
Subject(s): Houses; Sonnet (as Literary Form)

Reserved, it stands beside the quiet stream;
Its windows and its walls inside are bare;
No cover stills the floor or mutes the stair.
Through spectral panes shines forth no amber beam
Of friendly light at night; there does not seem
To be a thing but loneliness to share.
A strange hurt silence everywhere.
The once dear happy house is left to dream.
The listening ear is tuned to catch a strain
(A soft sweet echo from each lonely room)
Of silver music from another day.
Faint tokens of the past alone remain,
Grey ghosts that glide and falter in the gloom
As though to linger...loath to go away.
