SOLVING THE MYSTERY, by RICHARD W. LEWIS First Line: Silent I sit and gaze at space Last Line: No time to gaze, no turn to shirk! Subject(s): Introspection | ||||||||
Silent I sit and gaze at space, Amazed at man, and time, and things; Intent to solve myself, and God, Despite the blank my thinking brings. From out what depths of dark unknown, Comes all we are, and all we hold? To what vague end are we a-treck, With eyes so blind, and mien so bold? What means this rush, and driving hard, With brains ado by day and night -- Strong men half daft, who wrought in vain, To pile up wealth with wit and might? How comes that we of school well taught, Apart from runts and low bred imps, Should face this farce, depression-brought, And fight the air like floundering blimps? Is there no zone of "safety first," Some port toward which we may set sail, Midst calm to rest our ship at worst, Defying winds that twist and wail? Must hearts of men in wonder gaze, And think with brains that ache and burn, With naught of peace to soothe the brow, In ways awry that will not turn? Too long we've looked too low, too far, -- The time is here when man must search At home -- his heart -- and know his state, To free his life from blight and smirch, When this is done, we'll onward march! Our wheels will turn; and men at work, Will win the day with help divine, No time to gaze, no turn to shirk! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TOMB POND; FOR DAVE SMITH by NORMAN DUBIE RAREFIED; THE SWEATER IS MADE FROM ONLY THE FINEST SOFTEST UNDERHAIRS by ALBERT GOLDBARTH LEAVING THE ASYLUM by GREGORY ORR PARADISE LIGHTNING DAZZLE: 9.
