CALIFRONIA COLOR, by MARTHA W. LITTLE First Line: Black the smoke of lassen's fire Last Line: The spectrum of our sunburst state. Subject(s): California | ||||||||
Black the smoke of Lassen's fire, Black the walls that end the quest To pierce strange Mono's heaving breast And quickly quell her mad desire. Gray the wing of gull in flight, Gray of fog from sea-born bowers, Gray of Mission walls and towers, Gray -- Kaweah's crannied height. White is the foam of ocean's waves, Restless, roaring, and resounding, Loma's point to Del Norte pounding In Big Lagoon and Jolla's caves. Green of spring's fine Wedgwood tracing Appears on Fresno's fruitful vines, Lacy leafiness forms designs To aid in nature's gracing. Azure deep tints Tahoe's lake, Nestled where the mountains mold Their peaks into a cup to hold Heaven's blue for human's sake. Red of redbud and of Toyon, Spear of snow plant so amazing, O'er the snow its color blazing, Beckoning from winter's canyon. Glittering sheaves of gilded grain, Glowing fields of poppies golden, To the sun both are beholden For their burnished, brilliant stain. Lupines just inside the Gate In royal hue deck Tamal's land. Shasta's crest to silvery strand The spectrum of our sunburst State. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE LOVING SHEPHERDESS by ROBINSON JEFFERS WEST COAST SOUNDS ?اض 1956 by BOB KAUFMAN CALIFORNIA SORROW: CLAREMONT RAGA by MARY KINZIE IN CALIFORNIA: MORNING, EVENING, LATE JANUARY by DENISE LEVERTOV KEATS IN CALIFORNIA by PHILIP LEVINE CALIFORNIA; FOR ADRIENNE RICH by HAYDEN CARRUTH DRY GRASS & OLD COLOR OF THE FENCE & SMOOTH HILLS by LINDA GREGG EVERYTHING'S A FAKE by FANNY HOWE |
