PHOENIX NEST: ARMISTICE, by THOMAS LODGE Poet Analysis Poet's Biography First Line: For pity, pretty eyes, surcease Last Line: But unto you pertains the loss. Subject(s): Love - Complaints | ||||||||
For pity, pretty eyes, surcease To give me war, and grant me peace! Triumphant eyes, why bear you arms Against a heart that thinks no harms, A heart already quite appalled, A heart that yields and is enthralled? Kill rebels, proudly that resist; Not those that in true faith persist And, conquered, serve your deity. Will you, alas, command me die? Then die I yours, and death my cross; But unto you pertains the loss. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...TALKING RICHARD WILSON BLUES, BY RICHARD CLAY WILSON by DENIS JOHNSON THE BRIDGE by ALEXANDER ANDERSON THE RABBI'S SON-IN-LAW by SABINE BARING-GOULD MISGIVINGS by WILLIAM MATTHEWS THROUGH AGONY: 1 by CLAUDE MCKAY HEMATITE HEIRLOOM LIVES ON (MAYBE DECEMBER 1980) by ALICE NOTLEY QUICK AND BITTER by YEHUDA AMICHAI ROSALIND'S MADRIGAL, FR.
