THE SOLDIER'S GRAVE, by JOHN C. LONG First Line: Bowed with grief and sorrow Last Line: Will in silence a vigil keep. Subject(s): Sympathy; Empathy | ||||||||
Bowed with grief and sorrow That only a mother feels At the grave of her son, a soldier, The flag o'er his tomb reveals. Softly the wind greets the flowers, As they bend in silence there; Bowing to earth as in sympathy They join in a silent prayer. She sees him now as an infant And then as he marched away; "Oh, could he be ever with us," Her teardrops seem to say. For teardrops oft tell a story That lips will not reveal; Tell a story melancholy That eyes can ne'er conceal. No more shall the bugle calling Awaken him from his sleep; While his flag like a sentinel o'er him Will in silence a vigil keep. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SYMPATHY by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON WORDS TO JOE CERAVOLO by RON PADGETT SYMPATHY (2) by PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR SYMPATHY by HENRY DAVID THOREAU MISPLACED SYMPATHY by CHARLES FOLLEN ADAMS QUATORZAINS: 10.
