JUDAS, by EVELYN LUNDBERG First Line: So judas came and sought the priests and said Last Line: Knowing divine forgiveness even his! Subject(s): Judas Iscariot (d. 30 A.d.) | ||||||||
So Judas came and sought the priests and said "Take thou this silver for it drips of blood, The blood of One I loved and Who loved me -- Yes, even me. Have pity on me! Take This outward sign of inward rottenness. The blood is innocent; mine is the guilt." Refusal lightly lay upon their tongues; He cast the pieces at their feet and fled To suffer, in his own Gethsemane, A pain which burned his very soul -- nor knew A hope of comfort though he died of it. In either world there yawned a fiery hell; And yet -- if he should die -- a moment of Release before the aching knowledge came Again! One moment's ease before he stept From one hell to the next! Pray God that when He died, he looked upon Christ's loving face just once Knowing Divine forgiveness even his! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE SILVER TRADE by ARTHUR SZE THE BALLAD OF JUDAS ISCARIOT by ROBERT WILLIAMS BUCHANAN THE BALLAD OF CHRISTMAS by WALTER JOHN DE LA MARE THE MODERN JUDAS by HARRY RANDOLPH BLYTHE RETRIBUTION by WILMA CRITTENDEN HEART'S COUNSEL by HASSOLDT DAVIS SMALL BEAUTIES by EVELYN LUNDBERG |
