My Father above, beholding the meekness As dew on roses doth his balm spread, Sendeth His Ghost, most sovereign of cleanness, Into thy breast, ah, Rose of Womanhood! When I for man was born in my manhood -- For which, with roses of heavenly influence, I me rejoice to play in thy presence. Benign Mother, who first did enclose The blessed bud that sprang out of Jesse, Thou of Judah the very perfect Rose, Chosen of my Father for thine humility Without fading, most cleanest to bear me -- For which with roses of chaste innocence I me rejoice to play in thy presence. O Mother! Mother! of mercy most abound, Fairest Mother that ever was alive, Though I for man have many a bloody wound, Among them all there be roses five, Against whose mercy fiends may not strive; Mankind to save, best roses of defence, When they me pray for help in thy presence. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MADONNA by KATHARINE LEE BATES BALLADE TO OUR LADY OF CZESTOCHOWA by HILAIRE BELLOC OUR LORD AND OUR LADY by HILAIRE BELLOC PLASTIC BEATITUDE by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR A SONG OF MARY by LUCILLE CLIFTON ISLAND MARY by LUCILLE CLIFTON MARY'S DREAM by LUCILLE CLIFTON AGAINST WOMEN'S FASHIONS by JOHN LYDGATE DESCRIPTION OF THE GOLDEN AGE, FR.
