TO THE OTHER WOMAN, by BETTY MADSEN First Line: One of us must lose this thing Last Line: And oh, be very proud that god has given you so much! Subject(s): Fights | ||||||||
One of us must lose this thing For which we've lived and breathed and fought, And losing, go upon a lonely way, Failing to forget how once we sought For bread and drink within a land laid bare, Looking for sustenance when none was there. And if this lost and lonely One be you, remember you have met With ecstacy and harbored something sweet. And though your heart breaks and your eyes are wet, Be grateful for the little you have had, and then With lifted soul, go out and love again. And if I be the one to lose And must watch bravely while he goes away, Then hold his love with tender, careful hands And keep it always new and bright, I pray. A thing so dear demands a gentle touch. And oh, be very proud that God has given you so much! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE COLOR SERGEANT by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON THE TEMPTRESS by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON THE YOUNG WARRIOR by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON WOMEN THEY COULD KILL FOR by PETER JOHNSON ANSELM KIEFER by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER THE BOYS, THE BROOM HANDLE, AND THE RETARDED GIRL by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER BATTLE-CRIES by LOUIS UNTERMEYER ROAST LEVIATHAN by LOUIS UNTERMEYER SPOON RIVER ANTHOLOGY: ELIZABETH CHILDERS by EDGAR LEE MASTERS |
