OPPORTUNITY, by LOIS MAHAVIER First Line: Not like the sunset do I fade and die Last Line: But lo! I come again at close of day. Subject(s): Opportunity | ||||||||
Not like the sunset do I fade and die, When man has failed to greet me passing by; But each day anew, his life I enter there, Stretch forth glad hands, and open pastures fair; Allure with siren smiles down paths of ease, That will each longing of the soul appease. Dimmer and dimmer, as he meditates, I fade in distance, as he hesitates, Striving to prison bird's song in a cage Or glory of the rainbow's breadth to gauge Till, grasping the eternal truth that gives Sustaining faith and courage while he lives; Convinced that vision is the act's own seed, Tremblingly steps forth to follow where I lead, But lo! I fade in sunset's flaming red, With burning memory of the words I said; Deep in the abyss then he gropes his way, But lo! I come again at close of day. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...OPPORTUNITY by JOHN JAMES INGALLS OPPORTUNITY by NICCOLO MACHIAVELLI OPPORTUNITY by EDWARD ROWLAND SILL DIS ALITER VISUM; OR, LE BYRON DE NOS JOURS by ROBERT BROWNING THE GOLDEN TEXT by GEORGE FREDERICK CAMERON SONNET TO NIGHT by LOIS MAHAVIER |
