GOOD FRIDAY, by CATHERINE F. MANNING First Line: Today he dies, and dies once more in vain Last Line: "unechoed, while their lips say, ""we believe""." Subject(s): Good Friday; Holidays; Holy Week; Sonnet (as Literary Form) | ||||||||
Today He dies, and dies once more in vain, For Kindness, Peace and Love are dreaming still, And selfish War and Hate and cruel Will With scourge and crown are mocking Him again. We preach His selfless peace, yet feel no pain When burning wars scorch lives and minds. We fill Our eager palms with gold's desire until Our very souls are bartered for greed's gain. More shamefully the humble Victim dies Than our too-human thinking can perceive Unheeded, friendless, yes, but deeper lies This shame to God: His own deceive -- and grieve Him. They but stand aside and hear His cries Unechoed, while their lips say, "we believe". | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...WAS THAT REALLY A SONNET? by ANSELM HOLLO RETICENT SONNET by ANNE CARSON SONNET: OF THREE GIRLS AND OF THEIR TALK by GIOVANNI BOCCACCIO WHAT THE SONNET IS by EUGENE JACOB LEE-HAMILTON ON A MAGAZINE SONNET by RUSSELL HILLARD LOINES THE HOUSE OF LIFE: THE SONNET (INTRODUCTION) by DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI TO THE RETURNED GIRLS by FRANKLIN PIERCE ADAMS |
