HAPPY NEW YEAR TO THE CHILDREN OF GOD, by MARGERY SWETT MANSFIELD First Line: Carve the name of the year you live in on your heart Last Line: Alas! Alas! No brotherhood was there. Subject(s): Brotherhood; Holidays; New Year | ||||||||
Carve the name of the year you live in on your heart, Write it on the mid-arch of hall of fame, To tell to all who follow, "We did our part, In a year that we were granted. It has a holy name." Then tell how Peace, who was a fugitive In our fair world -- nowhere to lay her head -- Was given by our hands a place to live, A monument we builded to our dead. For they, defrauded ones, will never rest Within the conscience and the troubled mind, Until our common honesty attest By building what we bade them die to find. "For brotherhood, please kill!" was our sweet prayer! Alas! Alas! no brotherhood was there. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NEW YEAR'S POEM by MARGARET AVISON A SPEED OF HISTORY by MARGARET AVISON NEW YEAR'S DAY by DAVID LEHMAN LINES FOR THE NEW YEAR by JULIE CARR I AM RUNNING INTO A NEW YEAR by LUCILLE CLIFTON FOR THE NEW YEAR (2) by ROBERT CREELEY CORPUS CHRISTI: HIBERNAL by MARGERY SWETT MANSFIELD DOOMED BRIGHT CITY by MARGERY SWETT MANSFIELD IN A NATIONAL PARK (IN GRATITUDE TO HENRY GEORGE) by MARGERY SWETT MANSFIELD |
