Subject(s): Dawn; Sunrise

I HELD throughout the long and dusty day
A Bird of Peace safe-nested in my heart—
A dawn-lit memory—which all the smart
And friction of life's clamorous disarray
Could not disturb, or cause to fly away.
For I had waked ere dawn, and seen athwart
The eastern sky a well of gold upstart
And flood with radiance all the shadowy grey.

Beside my window, passionately still,
Stood one tall tree against the sky outlined:
And though the birds gave thanks that night was done,
And though each bud and leaflet was athrill
With rapture, it stirred not with any wind,
But held its breath and waited for the sun.
