SONNETS OF SUNRISE: 1, by EVA MARTIN Poet's Biography First Line: I held throughout the long and dusty day Last Line: But held its breath and waited for the sun. Subject(s): Dawn; Sunrise | ||||||||
I HELD throughout the long and dusty day A Bird of Peace safe-nested in my heart A dawn-lit memorywhich all the smart And friction of life's clamorous disarray Could not disturb, or cause to fly away. For I had waked ere dawn, and seen athwart The eastern sky a well of gold upstart And flood with radiance all the shadowy grey. Beside my window, passionately still, Stood one tall tree against the sky outlined: And though the birds gave thanks that night was done, And though each bud and leaflet was athrill With rapture, it stirred not with any wind, But held its breath and waited for the sun. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THIS MORNING, GOD by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR BURNING DAWN by HAYDEN CARRUTH DAWN by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON IN THE GARDEN AT THE DAWN HOUR by EDGAR LEE MASTERS EARLY RISER by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE WORDS WHEN WE NEED THEM by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE IN DARKNESS LOST by EVA MARTIN |
