A moss-laid bed beneath a willow tree, Where swans with arching necks spread dripping wings .... A pond close by ... a tiny sleeping sea ... Whose one blue eye is closed to vital things, Preferring dreams untouched by rippled waves ... A pale narcissus bending from the grass Sees mistily a beauty that it craves And cannot reach within the watery glass .... Unstirred by wind the circling trees embrace The pond with sturdy arms ... their leafy hands Push back the falling veil of night .... I trace The scene with yearning eyes .... My mind expands The view .... My fancy gives it life! Ah, see, The swans glide on the pond's tranquility! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...HOODED NIGHT by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE PLACE FOR NO STORY by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE BEAUTY OF THINGS by ROBINSON JEFFERS VARIATIONS ON A NEO-CLASSIC THEME by DONALD JUSTICE DIRGE AT THE END OF THE WOODS by LEONIE ADAMS KENNST DU DAS LAND by LEONIE ADAMS INVITATION TO A PAINTER: 3 by WILLIAM ALLINGHAM SONNET: 19.
