FIREFLIES, by WILLIAM HAROLD MCCREARY First Line: What flaming constellation gave you birth Last Line: The mystery of stars ... And fireflies? Subject(s): Fireflies; Glowworms | ||||||||
WHAT flaming constellation gave you birth, You who belong among the Pleiades, Wending their silent way above the earth, One with their deep, eternal mysteries? Has Cassiopeia been your dwelling place? Have you once shared Orion's burning zone, And gone astray from his unending chase To cross uncharted centuries alone? Or did Prometheus scorn your fitful spark, And flick you forth into the cosmic night To dare the haunted mazes of the dark, And come at last, a transient, brief delight To those who ponder under summer skies The mystery of stars ... and fireflies? | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BIOLUMINESCENCE: 1.
