GOD, by CLYDE MCGEE First Line: God is spirit Last Line: God is spirit ... Subject(s): God; Religion; Theology | ||||||||
God is spirit ... A spirit within us struggling against our inertia and indifference, Commanding us through conscience, Subduing our pride, Making us dissatisfied with our poor achievement, Urging us to do better, Reproving us for our sins, Promising us deliverance, Whispering to us of truth in fairer forms and of rarer beauty ... Coming to us ... A presence from beyond the rim of the sky, A voice out of the silences, A light within, A vision without, A cause calling for our devotion, A strength rising out of weakness ... The fulfillment of our hope, The satisfaction of our desire, The answer to our prayer ... God is spirit ... Hallowing all friendships, Brooding in the solicitude of motherhood, Tender and beautiful in the trust of childhood, Comforting in the sheltering strength of maturity ... A spirit ... Known in the purging that sorrow brings, In the discipline of tears, In the joy of service, In the grace of forgiveness, In firm faith kept through torturing doubt, In the kindness and patience and fidelity of lowly lives ... God ... Ever near us, Forever beyond us, A friend walking with us, An enemy pursuing us, A rod of chastening, A hand of healing, A mystery that awes us, A dream that haunts us, A love that seeks us, A beauty that woos us, A process of growth, An onward striving, A sense of power, Of oneness, Of peace, God is spirit ... | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...MYSTIC BOUNCE by TERRANCE HAYES MATHEMATICS CONSIDERED AS A VICE by ANTHONY HECHT UNHOLY SONNET 11 by MARK JARMAN SHINE, PERISHING REPUBLIC by ROBINSON JEFFERS THE COMING OF THE PLAGUE by WELDON KEES A LITHUANIAN ELEGY by ROBERT KELLY |
