At a call unforseen thou wert taken! A sharp cry of pain, A moment of struggle, And thy spirit had taken its flight. High on a hill thy grave is made, Open to sun and sky; The dawn's first light will fall on it, Late suns will linger there Till the stars are out in the quiet sky, Their faithful vigils keeping. Rest thou in peace, No pain can touch thee more, No storm beset thee sore, Rest thou in peace. O, Death, that humbles all our pride, O, Grave that makes us all one kin, I bow in silence, trustingly, And, then, a strange new sense of peace, And intimations of lands afar. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...SYMPATHY by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON WORDS TO JOE CERAVOLO by RON PADGETT SYMPATHY (2) by PAUL LAURENCE DUNBAR SYMPATHY by HENRY DAVID THOREAU MISPLACED SYMPATHY by CHARLES FOLLEN ADAMS QUATORZAINS: 10.
