THE PALACE OF STARLIGHT, by JANET B. MONTGOMERY MCGOVERN First Line: By day men pity me Last Line: The stars build before my eyes. Subject(s): Women | ||||||||
BY day men pity me, For all has been taken from me, And I lie without fouton on a heap of straw In a hut open to wind and rain. But none know my riches; they are hidden In the starlight that by night streams in Through the broken door when I am alone. Then all I have had comes back to me, And much that I never had or hoped for. So I am rich with the riches that none can filch; For though the stars flee before the spears of the Day God, Yet to-morrow night shyly will they come forth again. Moving softly, as gentle women who might have loved me, Tripping in time to music that sings in my soul. Though men have failed me, and women, yet is Nature constant, And I am happy, clasping star beams to my breast, As I wander at night through the palace The stars build before my eyes. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...ARISTOTLE TO PHYLLIS by JOHN HOLLANDER A WOMAN'S DELUSION by SUSAN HOWE JULIA TUTWILER STATE PRISON FOR WOMEN by ANDREW HUDGINS THE WOMEN ON CYTHAERON by ROBINSON JEFFERS TOMORROW by ANNA LETITIA BARBAULD LADIES FOR DINNER, SAIPAN by KENNETH KOCH GOODBYE TO TOLERANCE by DENISE LEVERTOV CHERRY TREES IN APRIL by JANET B.
