THE SONG OF LIFE, by DANIEL MCMILLAN First Line: The world is young, the world is fair Last Line: "shall reap a rich reward." Alternate Author Name(s): Dalintober Subject(s): Aging | ||||||||
"THE world is young, the world is fair, With mirth and music everywhere;" Thus sang the careless child, As wide he wander'd o'er the lea As blithesome as the mountain bee, And as the lambkin wild. "The world is young, the world is bright, One changing scene of new delight;" The youthful lover sung, As by the trysting tree he stood, While thought prospective stirr'd his blood And trembled on his tongue. "The world is moil, the world is toil, To move the mart and till the soil;" Thus sang the man of might, The fever fret of yesterday Has unrewarded pass'd away, The watchword still is -- fight! "The world is old, the world is cold, With cares and sorrows manifold;" This sang the hoary sage. The child, the youth, the man of might, The play, the passion, and the fight, Fade in the mists of age. "Weep not, thy hopes all lowly laid," The soothing voice of Nature said; "Howe'er thy hap be starr'd, Who in the varied scenes of life Display true virtue in the strife, Shall reap a rich reward." | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AFTER THE GENTLE POET KOBAYASHI ISSA by ROBERT HASS MEMORY AS A HEARING AID by TONY HOAGLAND AMOROSA AND COMPANY by CONRAD AIKEN GRAY WEATHER by ROBINSON JEFFERS FROM THE SPANISH by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON |
