Oh lone little house on the desert,
Why do you look so sad?
You once were filled with laughter,
Do you mourn for a little lad?

The vines still creep round your doorway,
The cactus blooms in the yard,
But where are the folk who came to live
'Neath your friendly arms, now marred?

Did gold in the hills allure them
And fill their breasts with hope?
Or was it visions of orange groves
And date palms on the slope?

Did loneliness of the desert
Dampen their ardor so gay?
Or did ghosts of wandering Ho-ho-kam
Frighten them all away?

The red and gold of the sunset
Still hang o'er the brow of the hill,
On guard stand the giant sahuaro
Like sentinels lone and still.

But no one stands at the portal
To welcome the good and the bad,
Oh lone little house on the desert,
Tell us your secret so sad.
