Subject(s): Death; Harvest; Dead, The

SHE heard the summons—and she needs must go!
Shall we who knew her grieve her passing? No!

For she went not as goes protesting Youth
Who is not done with questing after truth—

Who has but known the blossoming of Spring,
Has only dreamed what harvest time may bring.

Nor did she go as Age, who seeks release
From all life's burdens—asking only peace.

She had not felt the chill of Age's snow—
Only its golden harvest did she know—

And, as a harvester, when day is done,
Turns him home gladly with the setting sun—

Bearing rich sheaves, filled with the deep content
That full achievement brings, so, too, she went!

So would we all go—after harvesting,
Untouched by Winter, still remembering Spring!
