THE burden of the world upon your back You must tread always one appointed track. In loneliness you must forever go Weight of the world above, your strength below. Yet you go steadfastlyyou do not moan That you must bear the weight of it alone. You may not sail strange seasyou may not rove; No leisure yours for pleasureor for love! Your nerves and muscles always on the rack The world forever on your bended back! Always the burden, evermore the pain No one to help you, none to ease the strain! Not even I, who must go lonely, too, Yet proudthat none can take the place of you! I cannot helpI can but stand apart ... Bearing the worldand you, tooon my heart! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A BLESSING FOR A WEDDING by JANE HIRSHFIELD A SUITE FOR MARRIAGE by DAVID IGNATOW ADVICE TO HER SON ON MARRIAGE by MARY BARBER THE RABBI'S SON-IN-LAW by SABINE BARING-GOULD KISSING AGAIN by DORIANNE LAUX A TIME PAST by DENISE LEVERTOV A DESERTED HOUSE by ROSELLE MERCIER MONTGOMERY |
