YOU HELD MY HAND, by
First Line: The engine stalled just before the dark
Last Line: You held my hand.
Subject(s): Florida Keys

The engine stalled just before the dark.
The black malarial mosquitos began to sing . . .
The boat floundered ... shook ... A snag? A shark?
The captain said: "Broken piston ring."

It meant night on the Keys. Deserted, low,
Mangrove tangled, fog swathed, murderous Keys.
The wind howled above, the waves hissed below
The boat drifted with the treacherous undertow
Caught in the sea's relentless snare.
I glimpsed alligators' red, fiery stare,
And the onrushing shore's sharp, menacing bend . . .
I did not care, --
You held my hand.
