WOMEN'S WARD, by GENOA MORRIS First Line: In ordered groups they sit Last Line: "lost!" Subject(s): Psychiatric Hospitals; Women; Mad Houses; Insane Asylums | ||||||||
In ordered groups they sit: hands idle, heads downcast, like bulbous plants whose fruits are underground. Mute, puzzled, they opine -- inverted Nature. One stares indifferently at Nothing. One, sad of mien, must chuckle now and then eyeing the bare, hard floor. One glares, defiant, with recurrent cries commanding enemies to show themselves. One calls revenge upon an errant mate habitually, though here she sits supine. One rocks and gnaws her nails incessantly, watching the fast-locked door; she seems to say "Hurry, oh, hurry! I'm expecting you!" And one, with clock-like rhythm starts, strokes her brow and mutters "Lost!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...STILL-HILDRETH SANATORIUM, 1936 by DAVID BAKER GHOSTS OF A LUNATIC ASYLUM by STEPHEN VINCENT BENET MOTHER AND CHILD by DAVID IGNATOW CHILDREN OF THE WORKING CLASS by JOHN WIENERS THE ASYLUM by WILLIAM ROSE BENET LETTER FROM AN INSTITUTION by MICHAEL RYAN LOVE IN THE ASYLUM by DYLAN THOMAS |
