King Winter's last carousal came as March
Had led earth's children to the hills to view
The greening slopes, to sniff the swaying larch,
Watch clouds like soapsuds in a bowl of blue.
As jealous panthers stalk their fickle loves,
Down from the North he crept with ruthless tread,
Bent low the maples, tousled strutting doves,
Hurled sleet upon the wakening crocus bed.

Quite beaten though he was by laughing Spring,
Who side-stepped just enough to let him pass,
He dashed on howling, lashing, threatening,
And sought to awe pert bluebells, spears of grass.
Impatient buds peeped out -- peered wanly up,
Spring-beauty raised her dainty striped cup.
