King Winter's last carousal came as March Had led earth's children to the hills to view The greening slopes, to sniff the swaying larch, Watch clouds like soapsuds in a bowl of blue. As jealous panthers stalk their fickle loves, Down from the North he crept with ruthless tread, Bent low the maples, tousled strutting doves, Hurled sleet upon the wakening crocus bed. Quite beaten though he was by laughing Spring, Who side-stepped just enough to let him pass, He dashed on howling, lashing, threatening, And sought to awe pert bluebells, spears of grass. Impatient buds peeped out -- peered wanly up, Spring-beauty raised her dainty striped cup. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...BOTHWELL: PART 4 by WILLIAM EDMONSTOUNE AYTOUN IN PHARAOH'S TOMB by HAYDEN CARRUTH JUSTICE LISTENS AT THE GATES OF BEAUTY by AIME CESAIRE FOR THE INVESTITURE by CECIL DAY LEWIS ELEGY ASKING THAT IT BE THE LAST; FOR INGRID ERHARDT, 1951-1971 by NORMAN DUBIE MY SISTER, THE QUEEN by EDWARD FIELD L,ENVOI: IN OUR TIME by ERNEST HEMINGWAY VASHTI by JAMES WELDON JOHNSON |
