GLITTERING GATE, by
First Line: The world recedes and dims, and we two stand
Last Line: But ease of that pulse brings two death's avatar.

The world recedes and dims, and we two stand
Alone on ridge of abysm. We have come
Steadily, quietly, not with an oriflamme,
Not with trumpet and banner: these we shunned.
Singly we climbed the height, uncaravaned,
And drew no saber, beat no resonant drum;
Scorning all pretense and its tinsel sham,
Measured the pendulum of years' refund.

Measured, and in those equidistant years
Came to the ridge of abysm, and here met;
Here in the meeting of all otherwheres,
Strangers, now brother and brother, do we meet.
Beat of the pulse of the world may drive us far,
But ease of that pulse brings two death's avatar.
