COLORADO, by
First Line: The poets have sung the praises
Last Line: You'll find heaven very near.
Subject(s): Colorado (state)

The poets have sung the praises
Of the "Road to Mandalay,"
Of the land of the midnight sun,
And the lights along Broadway,

Of the awful cold of the Yukon,
And the "grandeur that was Rome";
Would that I could write an epic --
T'would do justice to my home!

My home is Colorado,
A state though young in years,
Carved out of the golden west
By the sturdy pioneers!

Where the arid land was conquered,
Crops wrung from the virgin soil,
Where the fickle goddess Ceres
Bows to the hand of toil.

Where the old man of the mountains
Gives of his wealth untold,
He shares his buried treasure --
His silver and his gold!

Pure air and great wide spaces,
Fine cattle roam the plains --
What matters sordid Wall Street,
Its losses or its gains?

My state where all are equal
Of high or of lowly birth --
A land of opportunity,
Where a man can prove his worth.

So come to Colorado,
Don't wait until next year;
Here, with freedom, love, and service,
You'll find heaven very near.
