SONNETS: MARSDEN BAY, NEAR SOUTH SHIELDS, by ELLEN C. NICHOLSON First Line: Were I an artist, I should paint the scene Last Line: And weed-grown rock, and cavern heavy-brow'd. Alternate Author Name(s): Nicholson, Mrs. James Subject(s): Art & Artists | ||||||||
WERE I an artist, I should paint the scene In many views and aspects. One by night -- The moon upon the waters, weirdly bright; -- One lonely barque, with sails of silver sheen, Filling the foreground. Outlined dark, yet keen, The rugged line of limestone cliffs should lie Athwart the fitful radiance of the sky. Nearer -- the great, lone rock that guards the bay -- The shadowy stretch of sand -- the shimmering spray. That were the fairest scene. There should be more: Views in the twilight, subtly soft and grey -- Views sunlit -- views of storms and flying cloud -- Of cliff fantastic -- sea-gull haunted shore, And weed-grown rock, and cavern heavy-brow'd. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE OLD AND THE NEW MASTERS by RANDALL JARRELL TO A YOUNG ARTIST by ROBINSON JEFFERS BOATS IN A FOG by ROBINSON JEFFERS ART VS.
