Alternate Author Name(s): Norris, Kathleen Thompson
Subject(s): California

On whitewashed walls falls shadow blue and cool:
The eucalyptus towers against a sky
Of empty azure. With his drooping mule
The barefoot, tonsured padre ambles by.
Again the peppers and the scent of musk,
The señoritas in their Spanish lace,
Fiesta from the dawning to the dusk,
And feasting in the patio's shaded space.

Ah, California, we who re-create
The beauty and the leisure of long ago
Ask ourselves: was it more real, that old state,
Than this gay captured dream our children know
Because our love remembers? Live once more
Through us, tiled roofs where roses spill perfume,
Shadows like lace upon an earthen floor,
Ramona creeping through the mustard bloom!
