BLESSED PERMANENCE OF HILLS, by EDITH OGDEN First Line: I could not live where there is not a hill Last Line: A panacea for littleness that kills. Subject(s): Mountains; Hills; Downs (great Britain) | ||||||||
I could not live where there is not a hill, Some mountain height to which to lift my eyes For comfort, for the guidance there which flies Straight to a weary heart, earth-winded, ill With little troubles; taken singly, nil. But who can singly take persistent lies, The daily aggravations, whens and whys, And doubts which constantly depress the will? Great troubles bring with them a courage greater, Full compensation, gift from our Creator. Only -- to ease the mind from fancied taunts, Regarding every needleprick which haunts The heart -- God made the permanence of hills, A panacea for littleness that kills. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CALIFORNIA SORROW: MOUNTAIN VIEW by MARY KINZIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE MOUNTAIN FASTNESS by HAYDEN CARRUTH GREEN MOUNTAIN IDYL by HAYDEN CARRUTH IF IT WERE NOT FOR YOU by HAYDEN CARRUTH THE SONG OF SHERMAN'S ARMY by CHARLES GRAHAM HALPINE THE VICTOR AT ANTIETAM [SEPTEMBER 17, 1862] by HERMAN MELVILLE |
