HOW THE NEW YEAR CAME ABOUT, by DEBORAH EGE OLDS First Line: On one side the curtain the new year was standing Last Line: She mounted the throne and he passed into rhyme. Subject(s): Holidays; New Year | ||||||||
On one side the curtain the New Year was standing, Awaiting the toll of the twelve o'clock bell. With hand on the inside the Old Year was waiting, Till he, too, should catch the first sound of that knell. The bell tolled but softly, the curtain was parted; The New met the Old on the threshold of time. He gallantly bowed and their hands met an instant. She mounted the throne and He passed into rhyme. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NEW YEAR'S POEM by MARGARET AVISON A SPEED OF HISTORY by MARGARET AVISON NEW YEAR'S DAY by DAVID LEHMAN LINES FOR THE NEW YEAR by JULIE CARR I AM RUNNING INTO A NEW YEAR by LUCILLE CLIFTON FOR THE NEW YEAR (2) by ROBERT CREELEY VILLAGE IN LATE SUMMER by CARL SANDBURG |
