He had not much in life -- Just youth and health; And little did he know of joy, Just heavy, plodding toil with peril frought. Just day succeeding day with duty done, And frugal fare -- a homely life. Few dreamed for what he yearned -- For dignity of place, For beautiful surroundings and for flowers And music glorious. At last the things he loved have come to him Only in death. Today he lay in majesty Within the portals of a stately church Surrounded by a mass of flowers, And from the organ rolled sweet, solemn strains. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...A FRIEND KILLED IN THE WAR by ANTHONY HECHT FOR JAMES MERRILL: AN ADIEU by ANTHONY HECHT TARANTULA: OR THE DANCE OF DEATH by ANTHONY HECHT CHAMPS D?ÇÖHONNEUR by ERNEST HEMINGWAY NOTE TO REALITY by TONY HOAGLAND |
