DAYBREAK, by HAZEL MAY OYLER First Line: All was dark, the city slumbered Last Line: Spring is on her way. Subject(s): Dawn; Day; Spring; Sunrise | ||||||||
All was dark, the city slumbered Save for the faint murmur of the stirring wind, And the dying echo of the passing train's harsh bark Beyond the distant hill. Above, the sleeping moon and silent stars grew dim. Looking out I saw the night go as silently as it had come And by those inevitable rhythms of nature's own symphony, I knew day had begun; With the awakening movement below Night faded into memory. Across the crisp blue space, Rose and fell the twitterings of passing objects like black specks whirling by. For an instant my heart grew sad at the thought of winter's coming, The shadow quickly passed with the sun's quiet secret: Spring is on her way. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THIS MORNING, GOD by LAURE-ANNE BOSSELAAR BURNING DAWN by HAYDEN CARRUTH DAWN by GEORGIA DOUGLAS JOHNSON IN THE GARDEN AT THE DAWN HOUR by EDGAR LEE MASTERS EARLY RISER by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE WORDS WHEN WE NEED THEM by NAOMI SHIHAB NYE |
