"A dull, ill-acted comedy is life!" Abe Cowley laughs, nigh splits himself in two. "A too well-acted tragedy!" Donne sighs. "A pretty farce!" smiles Lady Montagu. "Just rise above it!" Epicurus cries, "Enjoy yourself, don't let it worry you!" But Zeno, holding Conscience his true wife, Warns, "Curb your passions and yourself subdue!" "I fear this life is naught!" the skeptic's dirge From dust to dust reverberates no clue. "Try humanism," intellectuals urge, "It's sensible, it's balancing, it's new!" And so they talk, while crowds of men pass by To work and live, to trust in God and die. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CLASSICAL PROPORTIONS OF THE HEART; FOR FONTAINE by ELEANOR WILNER THE ROLE OF ELEGY by MARY JO BANG COUNTESS LAURA by GEORGE HENRY BOKER THE PRISONER OF CHILLON by GEORGE GORDON BYRON THE SACK OF BALTIMORE by THOMAS OSBORNE DAVIS BEFORE SEDAN by HENRY AUSTIN DOBSON BRIEF MOMENT by FAITH EVELYN PACKARD |
