PARADE, by ALBERTA M. PARIS First Line: We watched together, my neighbor and I Last Line: And a small gold star. Subject(s): Memory; Parades | ||||||||
We watched together, my neighbor and I, As the men marched by, And my heart was a traitor that thrilled to the beat Of their marching feet. Oh, what of the war god's gloating smile? There is peace for awhile. Today is a truce between war and war, The past is a door That is closed and barred, and tomorrow lies Beyond the skies. And so I forgot my neighbor's Jim, But her eyes were dim Remembering he'd leaned from a line like this For a farewell kiss, Then on again, with a gay good-bye, Head proudly high. Now nothing is left of her boy but these -- Memories, A heart that aches with an unhealed scar, And a small gold star. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE GERMAN BAND by EARL DERR BIGGERS WAR NOTES: 3.
