STORM KING (MOUNTAIN-PEAK IN THE OLYMPICS), by MARGARET LENORE PARTON First Line: Soft glow of summer sun Last Line: Storm king, you hold your throne! Subject(s): Olympic (mountains), Washington | ||||||||
Soft glow of summer sun On your calm brow abides, Bright flowers overrun Your scarred and crag-bound sides. Cascades of sparkling brooks Leap down where maidenhair, In cool and shadowy nooks Of damp rocks, clusters fair. In brooding silence deep, Majestic, stand the trees; Fallen trunks lie prone, asleep, Moss veiled in slow decease. The Lake in crescent form, Blue shimmering in the heat Of summer sun, so warm, Laves gently your cool feet. But when about your head The winter tempests whine, -- Snow-ridden, freezing, dread, Wracking the staunchest pine, -- Gone then the sun's warm rays; Brief gleams flash dull and cold, -- Then hide, as clouds; dark maze, All sullenly enfold. Then are you King mid bleak Gales' fiercest battles hurled; Unbowed, about your peak A snowy mantle swirled. Snows drift, and disappear When milder spring winds blow; Gay flowers adorn the year, Then fade in autumn's glow. Though countless ages roll, With seasons' varied tone, Yet changeless, monarch sole, Storm King, you hold your throne! | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...CONTRA MORTEM: THE STONE by HAYDEN CARRUTH THE CRAFTSMAN by MARCUS B.
