THE SWIMMING STAR, by WILLIAM A. PHELON First Line: Into the ocean's depths he plunged, Last Line: "a shark was on my trail!" Subject(s): Sharks; Swimming & Swimmers | ||||||||
INTO the ocean's depths he plunged, A swimmer fast and strong Tremendous rose the ringing cheers From all the joyous throng He swam with rhythmic strokes, and went Unworried on his way But those who held the watches spoke: "No records smashed to-day!" Then, suddenly, he added speed He plowed amid the foam, And faster, faster, grew his stroke, As he came hurtling home! Amid the cheers for records cracked, He landed, weak and pale "The record? What care I?" he gasped "A shark was on my trail!" | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...NOW THE CHILDREN ARE OLD ENOUGH by ANDREW MOTION STARING AT THE PACIFIC, AND SWIMMING IN IT by ALICIA SUSKIN OSTRIKER THE SWIMMER by JOHN CROWE RANSOM STILL ON WATER by KENNETH REXROTH A FOOL THERE WAS by WILLIAM A.
