LIFE, by BEULAH WYATT PHILLIPS First Line: Why fret about what we are here for Last Line: Be reverent, and helpful, and sweet. Subject(s): Faith; Belief; Creed | ||||||||
Why fret about what we are here for, -- Whence came we, or whither we go? We're here; -- there's an Infinite Power, -- And that much we surely do know. You ask about life; let us ponder: As all with our world is not right, It may be that God, our Creator, Is testing our faith and our might. "Who loses his life, he shall find it," Seems to us a queer paradox; Yet he who makes service a habit Doesn't fret about Pandora's box. Don't worry, or fume, or get morbid; Some Power made the lily and rose: Before you ask what we are here for, -- Tell me how the wild flower grows. Why probe into the Infinite? Why gaze at the burning hot sun? It doesn't change them for one minute, Nor answer your questions, not one! We people of earth in our living Are part of a pattern and plan, -- With sunshine and shadow both blending, A picture not visioned by man! Through prayer we get something sustaining, As plants from the sun and the soil; List closely, we also get guidance, Adverse circumstances to foil. As to "where," when this life is over, -- What state, or condition, or home; Let that be the least of your worries; Live right, and let God's part alone! So leave to our Heavenly Father The questions of destiny deep; And lend a hand here to our brother, -- Be reverent, and helpful, and sweet. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...UNHOLY SONNET 4 by MARK JARMAN QUIA ABSURDUM by ROBINSON JEFFERS GOING TO THE HORSE FLATS by ROBINSON JEFFERS SONNET TO FORTUNE by LUCY AIKEN JONATHAN EDWARDS IN WESTERN MASSACHUSETTS by ROBERT LOWELL RELIGIOUS INSTRUCTION by MINA LOY JOHN BARLEYCORN by ROBERT BURNS AN APPEAL TO MY COUNTRYWOMEN by FRANCES ELLEN WATKINS HARPER |
