In the golden days of make-believe Whate'er my fancy sought to weave Before my magic eyes loomed real As homespun from the spinning wheel; With naught throughout the livelong day But happy hours of carefree play, All things were mine I could conceive, In the golden days of make-believe. At moment's notice I could be Whate'er I chose, and plainly see Things that my eyes observe no more As in the lost days of yore, When I was pirate, knight and king And fared forth in bold tourneying, But now, alas! I can't deceive Myself, nor longer make believe.
