LET THERE BE NO NEED OF WAR, by CLARA JOHNSTON PIERCE First Line: My son has gentle eyes, and hair blown back Last Line: My son, -- but let there be no need of war. Subject(s): Antiwar Movements; Anti-war Protests | ||||||||
My son has gentle eyes, and hair blown back As if to better clear the quiet brow For beauty's contemplation. Bud and bough Are food to store his mind's deep haversack: -- The moss-cool woods provide his bivouac And furred and feathered buddies there allow His kindly nearness as he ponders how To shield their trusting shyness from attack. Cleansed my heart of all that rankled there -- The fear, the doubt and hate that heretofore Have made my soul unfit for answered prayer. Oh God of Ages, hear me, I implore, This is not a selfish plea to spare My son, -- But let there be no need of War. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...AT A MARCH AGAINST THE VIETNAM WAR (LATER VERSION) by ROBERT BLY MARCH IN WASHINGTON AGAINST THE VIETNAM WAR by ROBERT BLY WHAT WERE THEY LIKE by DENISE LEVERTOV IN DISTRUST OF MERITS by MARIANNE MOORE THE DRUM by JOHN SCOTT (1730-1783) I WILL NOT FIGHT by ADA HILTON DAVIES INFANT SORROW, FR.
