MUDDY WATERS, by GERTRUDE RAY PLUMMER First Line: Clouds are heavy overhead Last Line: Then he drifts away from sight. Subject(s): Floods | ||||||||
Clouds are heavy overhead; Rain has fallen steadily North of where the Brazos flows Through the richest bottom lands. Refugees from ravaged farms Straggle in to higher ground; Stranded people meet and talk -- Shake their heads in grave despair. Same old story of the floods -- Angry waters rushing past, Taking profit from the soil -- Taking toll from bottom lands. Crossing to the other side People stop upon the bridge, Watch the muddy waters swirl, -- Inundating shrubs and trees. All eyes see a rangy beast -- Bald-faced, longhorn Texas steer -- Drifting helplessly away, While he fights to keep his head Up above the water line. "Get a rope and pull him out!" Someone frantically exclaims; But the rope cannot be found. They can hear his plaintive "low", And his pleading eyes are turned Toward them in his last appeal, -- Then he drifts away from sight. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...THE HIGH TIDE AT [OR, ON THE COAST OF] LINCOLNSHIRE by JEAN INGELOW THE SURF by JURGIS BALTRUSHAITIS UNDER THE WHARF by IDA COLE BARTLATT THE COMET by THOMAS LOVELL BEDDOES THE SECRET OF THE WATERFALL by WILLIAM ROSE BENET TO LADY AUSTEN, WRITTEN IN RAINY WEATHER by WILLIAM COWPER |
