MUDDY WATERS, by
First Line: Clouds are heavy overhead
Last Line: Then he drifts away from sight.
Subject(s): Floods

Clouds are heavy overhead;
Rain has fallen steadily
North of where the Brazos flows
Through the richest bottom lands.

Refugees from ravaged farms
Straggle in to higher ground;
Stranded people meet and talk --
Shake their heads in grave despair.

Same old story of the floods --
Angry waters rushing past,
Taking profit from the soil --
Taking toll from bottom lands.

Crossing to the other side
People stop upon the bridge,
Watch the muddy waters swirl, --
Inundating shrubs and trees.

All eyes see a rangy beast --
Bald-faced, longhorn Texas steer --
Drifting helplessly away,
While he fights to keep his head

Up above the water line.
"Get a rope and pull him out!"
Someone frantically exclaims;
But the rope cannot be found.

They can hear his plaintive "low",
And his pleading eyes are turned
Toward them in his last appeal, --
Then he drifts away from sight.
