DESERT SUNSET, by BLANCHE W. PORTER First Line: Upon the silence of the desert land Last Line: For us -- alone -- upon the desert swell. Subject(s): Deserts; Evening; Food & Eating; Sunset; Twilight | ||||||||
Upon the silence of the desert land A burning-beauty, ageless, artist-planned -- The desert-dust in sun's refracting tint Changing to gold, each arrow-head of flint! Mist-clouds become a limpid, lilac tone Of silver mounted amethyst, and stone. The sunset! -- Nuggets in a miner's hut Here hide from thieves who ravish charm -- and cut! So like crescendo chords the shadows crawl Across the foot-hilled desert's slope and fall -- Till pronto! twilight veils with purpling glooms And giant cacti with the yucca-blooms Project their silhouettes against the night -- Enrapturing us -- as gods -- with sheer delight! So fancy we, as lingering in this spell, That Sunset is a señorita belle A-tripping gay fandangoes... her farewell For us -- alone -- upon the Desert swell. | Discover our Poem Explanations and Poet Analyses!Other Poems of Interest...JOURNEY INTO THE EYE by DAVID LEHMAN FEBRUARY EVENING IN NEW YORK by DENISE LEVERTOV THE HOUSE OF DUST: 1 by CONRAD AIKEN TWILIGHT COMES by HAYDEN CARRUTH IN THE EVENINGS by LUCILLE CLIFTON NINETEEN FORTY by NORMAN DUBIE CONTRA MORTEM: THE CHILD by HAYDEN CARRUTH |
