PRAYER FOR PEACE, by MABEL POSEGATE First Line: Grant us surcease, we pray, from cosmic strife Last Line: God, give our younger sons no battle-cry! Subject(s): Peace; Prayer | ||||||||
Grant us surcease, we pray, from cosmic strife, Let us have quiet for reflective space. Mankind, now conflict-weary, would replace All vestiges of grimness which the knife Of Hate has scarred so deeply, with fresh life -- Would summon plaintive loveliness and grace And kindlier ways of thinking to a race Desirous never more to march to fife. War reaped its harvest. Those whom we held best Were first to quaff the seething cup and die. In silence they courageously fared west, Who loved the radiant earth, the sapphire sky -- Brooke, John McCrea, Joyce Kilmer, and the rest.
